Isn’t it funny how when you’re 17 you think you have yourself all figured out but in reality you have no idea?  You are really only about 10% comfortable in your skin and 90% insecure and unsure of things. 

Oftentimes when I’m teaching high schoolers I just want to sit them down and tell them what’s what. “Trust me, you will not care what that boy thinks of you in 2 years…” or “You will regret thinking it’s cool to get Cs and Ds when you’re trying to make something of your life”.  I guess you cannot really warn them though.  It’s all part of the learning and development process.  I am constantly torn between extreme frustration with the fact that their petty teenage drama is causing them to fail their history tests and empathy.  I have clear memories of when I was in their shoes.

I’m beginning to realize that I signed up for more than just teaching history for the next 30-35 years…because I’m teaching it to the most resistant, angry, tormented and fragile group of Americans that exists.
